Two people have been charged after a man was cut on the legs with a machete, kicked and punched while being detained inside a home in northern NSW.

Police say a 24-year-old man accepted a lift from the pair to a house on Ryan Street at South Grafton where he was assaulted by a number of people and struck several times with a machete last month.

The assault allegedly continued for several hours before a group of men put him in a car and took him to another location where he was able to escape.

Police charged a man, 24, and a woman, 25, on Tuesday over the kidnapping.

The man was refused bail to appear at Grafton Local Court on Wednesday and the woman was granted conditional bail to face the same court on December 19.
