Police found a woman stabbed to death in her NSW home after they were tipped off by ambulance officers treating a man after a car accident.

The body of the 67-year-old woman was found with a number of stab wounds at the home in Toronto on Saturday night.

A 51-year-old man, who had been in a single-vehicle accident at Fassibern, was later charged with her murder.

He was remanded in custody after appearing in Newcastle Local Court on Sunday. He had been treated for facial injuries from the car crash.

Chief Inspector Gerard Lawson described it as a tragedy and said the man and woman were known to each other.

A crime scene remains in place at the home and investigations by Lake Macquarie Local Area Command with assistance from the Homicide Squad are continuing.

Chief Inspector Lawson said there had been no previous violent incidents between the couple reported to police.

"We're not aware of any violent history between the two parties at this stage, but that may be disclosed as the investigation continues," he said.
