A NSW chicken processing plant where 42 workers inhaled toxic fumes has been fined $15,000.

Workers at the Bartter Enterprises plant, a subsidiary owned by Baiada Poultry, were hospitalised after being overcome by chlorine dioxide fumes near Newcastle in March, the state's EPA says.

The fumes were traced back to excess chlorine in system used to sanitise equipment but cleaning processes have since changed.
