A 61-year-old teacher has been charged after he allegedly indecently assaulted a teenage girl he met at a high school in Sydney's southwest.

It's alleged the man assaulted the 16-year-old student after he arranged to meet her at a park in Marickville in the city's innerwest, on New Year's Eve.

Police say the teacher made several sexually-explicit calls and texts to the girl after the attack.

He was arrested at a home in Kingsrove on Thursday and charged with five counts of aggravated indecent assault, while also being served a provisional Personal AVO.

The man was refused bail and is due to face Sutherland Local Court on Friday.
