A fight between two women in Wollongong has ended with one charged with stabbing the other in the face.

An argument broke out between the two women, who are understood to know each other, about midday on Tuesday in Globe Lane when one, 44, allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the other woman, 46, on the left side of her face.

The alleged offender then tried to leave but was detained by a male witness until police arrived and arrested her.

The alleged victim was taken to Wollongong Hospital to be treated for the "superficial" stab wound, police said.

The 44-year-old was charged with wounding and causing grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

She was conditionally bailed to face Wollongong Court on January 10.
