The Northern Territory chief minister has invited newly-elected American president Donald Trump to the Top End and offered him crocodile insurance.

Michael Gunner wrote an open letter to the Republican after he defeated Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton in the race to the White House.

Mr Gunner said he hoped to continue the NT's relationship with the United States with its new leader.

"Please find enclosed crocodile insurance that we provide every president who graces the Territory's shores," Mr Gunner wrote.
