The federal government is considering giving the Northern Territory's royal commission into juvenile justice an extra four months to deliver its final report

Attorney-General George Brandis on Wednesday received a request to extend the date from March 31 to August 1 next year.

"This is being considered as a matter of priority," a spokeswoman from the Attorney-General's office said.

The extension could add significantly to the budget for the inquiry, which is being jointly funded by the NT and commonwealth governments and is so far estimated to cost $50 million.
