Revellers in the Northern Territory will welcome in 2017 with waterfront fireworks and a free concert from Aussie singer Diesel.

New Year's Eve celebrations will be held at Darwin's Waterfront, with firework displays at 9pm and midnight.

Six-time ARIA winner Diesel will give a free performance at 9.30pm and there will also be a kids shows, face painting and local live music.

Local restaurants and food stalls will be trading for dinner but families are welcome to pack a picnic, spread a blanket and relax on the lawns.

Party-goers should pack a poncho, with rain and thunderstorms forecast over the weekend.

Those needing a New Year's Day recovery session can head back to the Waterfront on January 1 for a free "jazz on the lawns" concert from 12pm to 4pm.
