NT police found Furanylfentanyl, a synthetic opioid, in Darwin for the first time during a recent drug seizure.

The substance is more commonly found in other countries and its discovery is causing significant concern.

"Furanylfentanyl is extremely dangerous due to its potency. It is known to cause deaths," NT Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Stringer said.

"The lethal drug comes in powder or pill form and is often mixed into, or sold as heroin, often without the consumer's knowledge."
