A NSW train passenger is accused of indecently assaulting and biting an off-duty police officer during an outburst that also saw two male commuters assaulted.

It's alleged the 60-year-old man touched the female officer inappropriately after she tried to speak to him about his abusive behaviour towards other commuters on a train between Hornsby and Woy Woy about 7.15pm on Friday.

Police say two male passengers intervened but were also assaulted by the man, who allegedly tried to bite and punch two Sydney Trains officers as they tried to restrain him.

The man bit the off-duty policewoman and again indecently assaulted her as he was detained, police say.

He was charged with 12 offences including two counts of assault with act of indecency and assaulting a police officer in execution of their duty.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Gosford Local Court on January 24.
