Almost a third of the existing Royal Adelaide Hospital site in the centre of the city will be returned to parklands under redevelopment plans revealed by the South Australian government.

Some buildings will be demolished but heritage structures will be retained with a research facility also planned along with tourism and accommodation precincts.

Work on the site will start once the hospital's operations are transferred to the new Royal Adelaide which is expected to open some time next year.
