An explosion has rocked a sports facility in Belgium, killing at least one person and injuring at least two people.

Reuters has reported that it's suspected a gas accident, rather than a terror attack, caused the explosion.

The blast happened just after midnight local time on Friday at the Plaine Chalon.

A rescue services spokesman has told Belgian newspaper Het Laatse Niews that a large section of the building had collapsed and that people were feared trapped in the rubble, the AP reported.

Police in Chimay, which lies some 120km south of the capital Brussels, could not be immediately reached for confirmation.

Police have cordoned off the area in the town.

Belgium has been living under a high threat level following terror attacks at the airport and Brussels' subway on March 22 that killed 32 people.
