More Melbourne train passengers are rubbing shoulders with their fellow commuters as overcrowding during the morning peak gets worse.

Some 27.7 per cent of passengers in the morning peak travelled on overcrowded trains in May this year, up from 26.1 per cent at the same time last year, Public Transport Victoria statistics on Thursday show.

"If politicians used PT all the time, problems like crowding and infrequent services would be fixed pronto," public transport advocate Daniel Bowen posted on Twitter.
