The Pacific Rim sequel is confirmed for a February 2018 release...

Universal and Legendary Pictures have put out a formal announcement confirming that Pacific Rim 2 is definitely pressing ahead, and also revealing when to expect it.

The official press statement also confirms that John Boyega is leading the cast of the new film. And the movie has a release date of February 23rd 2018.

In the US, that means it’s opening a week after Black Panther, and a week before Jason Statham does battle with a giant shark in Meg. It may yet be that release dates will shuffle around here.

In the meantime, though, here’s that announcement in full…

John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) leads the cast of PACIFIC RIM 2, the follow-up to 2013’s cinematic battle for global domination that took audiences to future Earth’s land, skies and seas and introduced an entirely new kind of warfare. Steven S. DeKnight (Spartacus, Daredevil) directs the next chapter of the film that generated more than $400 million at the global box office, including a strong performance in China. The 3D epic adventure will be produced by returning PACIFIC RIM producers Thomas Tull, Guillermo del Toro and Mary Parent. Boyega joins the production team alongside Femi Oguns.

We wait and see if the likes of Charlie Hunnam will be returning to the movie too…
