Former Brisbane lord mayor Jim Soorley has been appointed to head a panel to review the performance of Queensland's electoral commission.

The review will look at the performance of the commission during this year's local government elections, the referendum on fixed four-year terms for state parliament and the by-election in Toowoomba South

The panel will also include former Logan mayor Pam Parker and former South Burnett mayor Wayne Kratzman.

Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath said state elections were automatically reviewed but there was no legal requirement for local government elections to be reviewed.

"It is very important that we take an opportunity whenever elections are held, to step back and do a review."
