An own goal by Gustavo Gomez has given hosts Bolivia a 1-0 win over Paraguay in the 12th South American qualifying round for the 2018 World Cup.

Their second defeat in two matches leaves Paraguay with 15 points and a difficult task in securing one of the region's berths in the 2018 tournament.

Bolivia, meanwhile, boosted their point total to seven.

In the later match, Ecuador dominated Venezuela 3-0 to move closer to qualifying for the World Cup and demolish whatever hopes the visitors still harboured of making the trip to Russia.

Ecuador bounced back from two straight losses to climb to 20 points from 12 matches, while Venezuela sits in the cellar with five points.

The result leaves the Ecuadorians well-placed to secure their ticket for Russia 2018 when the South American qualifiers resume in March.
