A bushwalker who fell ill in a remote area of Victoria's southwest has waited eight hours to be flown to hospital after rescuers had to prioritise a nearby multi-car crash.

The woman, aged in her 60s, became unwell after 4pm on Tuesday and was met on the Great South West Walk at 7pm by paramedics, but she couldn't be flown to Melbourne until about midnight, Ambulance Victoria said on Wednesday morning.

The five-hour delay came after two air ambulances were called to a serious two-vehicle crash at Simpson at 4.30pm with four people needing to be flown to Melbourne hospitals.
