A pedophile dance teacher has spent his first night in jail after being sentenced to at least 18 years behind bars.

Grant William Davies abused eight girls and one boy who were students at his inner-west RG Dance studio over a 13-year period before he was arrested in 2013.

He asked his victims, the youngest of whom was around nine, to wear G-strings to class, took explicit photos of them, and sent relentless sexual messages through text or MSN messenger.

In many cases the offences progressed to sexual acts during private lessons, at Davies' home, on dance trips or in a car.

Judge Jennie Girdham said Davies had given the impression he thought the children were "in part responsible because they sent him sexual signals".

Davies was arrested after his wife reported the inappropriate messages to police.

He pleaded guilty to 28 child sex charges last year.

Davies was sentenced to a maximum of 24 years and will be eligible for parole in May 2031.
