Baby penguins have stolen the show for the 154th birthday of Melbourne Zoo.

The five eight-week-old chicks were weighed, wrapped in blankets, and hand-fed fish before snuggling back into their boxes in the penguin nursery on Thursday.

Nearby Miss Wing, the zoo's most sociable two-year old penguin, squawked and flapped her wings demanding attention.

A total of 21 adults, seven chicks, and two eggs comprise the zoo's Little Penguin colony after a fox killed 14 penguins last November.

Wildsea keeper Beth Geraldine says another fox was sighted lurking the zoo's perimeter a couple of weeks ago.

Electric fencing, more spotlights, and an expert fox-tracker and his dog remain on guard to protect the Little Penguin colony at night.
