The first images from the PeruSAT-1 Earth observation satellite have been received at the CNOIS satellite operations centre in Lima.

PeruSAT 1, which orbits Earth at an altitude of 694km, captured views of the coastal region of Lambayeque and the Andean city of Ayacucho, among other locations

The satellite began transmitting on September 20, five days after it was launched from the European Space Agency complex in French Guiana, the defence ministry said.

Experts at CNOIS are currently calibrating the satellite's sensors and cameras and the spacecraft is due to be fully operations by early November.

PeruSAT-1, considered the most sophisticated observation satellite in Latin America, can see objects and features smaller than a metre.

Officials say the satellite will provide useful data in areas such as national defence, agriculture and disaster prevention.
