A helicopter pilot forgot about powerlines when conducting agricultural spraying at a Tasmanian farm, a transport safety watchdog investigation into a serious crash has found.

A 37-year-old man at the controls suffered serious injuries and the chopper was destroyed when the aircraft struck the wires and then plummeted to the ground in the July crash near Deloraine, with the pilot later telling investigators he "had momentarily forgotten about the powerlines".

"The pilot was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. The helmet was found some distance from the wreckage and was badly damaged," said the Australian Transport Safety Bureau report released on Wednesday.
