German-speaking minister Mathias Cormann has been tasked by Malcolm Turnbull to deepen Australia's ties with Germany and the rest of Europe.

The Belgium-born finance minister is in Hong Kong for meetings where he's sat down with Germany's Deputy Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel.

"One of the jobs the prime minister has given me is to leverage my German-speaking background and my European background to help promote stronger ties and more business, increased trade and investment between Australia and Germany and Australia and Europe more generally," he told Sky News on Friday.
