Papua New Guinea's Governor-General Sir Michael Ogio is fighting for his life in a Brisbane hospital following complications with his heart.

The 74-year-old was flown to the hospital for specialist medical attention in recent days and his condition is listed as critical.

PNG's Prime Minister Peter O'Neill extended his well wishes to the governor-general, who was sworn into office early in 2011.

"Our Governor-General is truly an outstanding leader in our nation, and we pray for positive news from his family," he said in a statement on Friday evening.
