Crown Casinos and pokies manufacturer Aristocrat are being threatened with legal action over allegations of "deceptive" machines.

Maurice Blackburn principal Jacob Varghese said the law firm is writing to Crown and Aristocrat on Monday over the popular Dolphin Treasure game, advising they will litigate if action is not taken to remedy two design flaws - that the lawyers claim deceives people.

Mr Varghese says the machines encourage users to think they've had "near misses" at wins.

A letter was to be sent on Monday.

In a statement, Aristocrat denies its games are designed to encourage problem gambling and says it will vigorously defend the legal action - that Mr Varghese says is on behalf of recovering South Australian gambling addict Shonica Guy.
