A public tip-off has led police to nab one of two men who escaped from a jail in Canberra this weekend.

Officers were alerted that Patrick McCurley, 28, was spotted driving in Weston Creek on Sunday evening, two days after he allegedly broke out of Alexander Maconochie Centre with a fellow detainee.

McCurley was taken back into custody after his car was stopped by police in Majura.

Police say they're still looking for the other prisoner, 21-year-old Jacob MacDonald, and have urged anyone who may know his whereabouts to contact them.
