Specialist police will investigate the circumstances surrounding a two-car crash in central Victoria that has left a woman dead and eight others injured including several children.

A 4WD towing another car on a trailer veered onto the wrong side of the road and hit an oncoming vehicle, a Volkswagen, in Runnymede, near Bendigo, at 3pm on Friday, police say.

The youngest hurt was a toddler travelling in the 4WD, while the woman killed was a passenger in the rear of the Volkswagen.

Two teenagers were also airlifted to hospital but all of those injured were in a stable condition on Friday evening.

In another road fatality a man has died after his car struck a power pole at Dromana on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula about 11.15pm on Friday.

The driver, who was the sole occupant, died at the scene.
