A woman in her 20s was killed when the light plane came down on Middle Island, near the town of 1770, about 10.30am on Tuesday.

The woman, believed to be a backpacker, died at the scene.

A 29-year-old woman was flown to Rockhampton Hospital with suspected head injuries and a possible broken leg along with a 13-year-old boy with a possible leg fracture.

The pilot, a man in his 60s, suffered a fractured spine, and was taken to Bundaberg Hospital, but is expected to be flown to Brisbane for surgery later this week.

The crash was witnessed by passengers on a second tourist plane, which was able to land safely on the same stretch of sand.

They then raised the alarm with emergency services, which reportedly had difficulty accessing the scene.
