A serial bank robber dubbed the "Postcard Bandit" is seeking a permanent hold on a charge stemming from a Perth prison escape 27 years ago.

Brenden James Abbott, 54, appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday via video link from Casuarina prison, charged with escaping from legal custody over his 1989 breakout from Fremantle prison.

His lawyer Sarah Jessup said she was applying for a permanent stay of proceedings, which if granted, would mean the charge would not be pursued by prosecutors.

Ms Jessup said a two-day hearing was required because it was a complex application involving details about Abbott's significant historical background.

Abbott will return to court on November 1 when a hearing date is expected to be set.

It was Abbott's fifth appearance in a Perth court after his extradition from Queensland in May.

Abbott was granted parole in Brisbane in April, having served 18 years of a 25-year sentence for a string of robberies and another escape from a Queensland prison in 1997.

He was quickly arrested on his release and unsuccessfully fought his extradition to WA.
