No targets but Australia's athletes will be given everything they need to regain top spot in the Commonwealth Games medal tally.

That was the promise of Australia's chef de mission Steve Moneghetti with the nation's campaign for the 2018 Games officially launched on the Gold Coast on Thursday.

Australia (49 gold) finished second to England (58 gold) in the medal tally at the 2014 Glasgow Games.

Moneghetti says no stone will be left unturned for any of the 500 athletes and para-athletes - Australia's largest team - who will be picked for the Gold Coast Games.

"Once the team are in the field of play, it's their responsibility," Moneghetti said.

"We will assist the sports to make sure the athletes come together at the Commonwealth Games with the best preparation they've got.

"After that, the results will look after themselves ... if we have the best prepared team, we will be the number one nation, that's a fact."

Thursday's launch comes 503 days before the start of the Gold Coast Games in April 2018.

Moneghetti says marking the start of Australia's campaign will help focus athlete's minds.

"503 days ... I'm still an athlete in mind and that is 72 Sundays," he said.

"Sundays are our long-run days for marathon runners. 72. That's not many.

"There's a real excitement and a real buzz.

"This city has already embraced the Games, it's now our role to make sure the general public and the athletes are really switched on to how close the Games are."
