An asylum seeker who had been in Australia for medical treatment has been moved offshore from a Melbourne immigration detention centre, advocates say.

About a dozen protesters were at Melbourne Airport as the Sudanese man was taken away early on Tuesday.

They say he was previously held on Manus Island and was one of 267 people brought to Australia for medical reasons.

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection said in a statement reports an asylum seeker was returned to Manus Island after receiving medical treatment in Australia were incorrect and that detainees were routinely transferred for a range of reasons.
