Sixteen puppies have perished and two people were injured in a fire at a townhouse in the Illawarra region.

The puppies were being kept at the Warrawong house when it went up in flames about 10.20am on Tuesday.

A man received second-degree burns to his arm and upper torso and a woman broke an ankle while escaping the fire with two children, who were uninjured.

Another puppy was rescued from the house and treated by paramedics, local media reported.
