Qantas has picked Melbourne to Los Angeles as the first route for its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

Qantas international chief executive Gareth Evans said the Dreamliner, which will fly the route from December 15, 2017, is a "game-changing aircraft" for Australia's biggest carrier.

"The aircraft itself offers passengers larger windows, a smoother ride and better air quality to reduce jetlag," Mr Evans said.

The Dreamliner will replace a Boeing 747 on the route and carry 236 passengers six times a week - subject to government and regulatory approval.

The daily Airbus A380 service currently on the route will continue.

Tourism Australia managing director John O'Sullivan said it was a smart move by Qantas, given almost 700,000 Americans had visited Australia over the past 12 months.

Qantas has already said it will use the Dreamliner to operate non-stop flights between Perth and London from March 2018.
