Qld adoption bill set for political debate

A bill to allow same-sex couples, single people and those undergoing fertility treatment to adopt is due to be debated in Queensland's hung parliament.

The changes, which would amend the state's 2009 Adoption Act, were introduced in September by Communities Minister Shannon Fentiman.

Ms Fentiman has said Queensland was out of step with other states and territories and broadening the eligible groups would create a more flexible pool for adoptive parent assessments.

A committee that examined the bill was unable to reach a majority decision on the bill after hearing "impassioned commentary" from those for and against its passing.

The legislation would also remove penalties for breaching contact statements - which allow an adopted person or birth parent to outline their wishes about being contacted - and help adoptees retain their identity.
