Queenslanders appear to be getting into the Christmas spirit with figures showing each person will spend an average $779 over the festive season.

Figures from the RACQ's Cost of Living report show Queenslanders will spend a collective $9.7 billion over the Christmas period.

Spokeswoman Renee Smith said the expenditure was split across presents, parties and other expenses.

"Queenslanders are a generous bunch and a lot of what we're spending, more than half in fact, is spent on gifts for others over Christmas," Ms Smith said.

"The second largest chunk of money being spent is on holidays, which doesn't come as that much of a surprise."

The RACQ urged people not to break the bank this Christmas, with many retailers now jumping the gun on the annual Boxing Day sales and offering discounts in the lead-up to December 25.
