Queensland's coroner will investigate why a Bundaberg inmate jailed for relatively minor offences was placed in the same unit as the notorious offender who would become his murderer.

Leonard Raymond Gordon was two days from being released from the Maryborough Correctional Centre, where he was serving time for wilful damage, when he was murdered with a chin-up bar by Gregory George Glebow in October 2012.

Glebow was already serving a life sentence for murder and will not be eligible for parole until 2044 following the attack on Gordon.

State Coroner Terry Ryan will investigate why the two men were placed in the same unit as part of an inquest beginning in Bundaberg on Monday.
