Maintenance staff at Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital have taken industrial action, citing ongoing concerns over job security.

A group of 25 building and engineering maintenance staff walked off the job at 8am on Tuesday, saying management must address the ongoing use of external labour hire companies.

Electrical Trades Union organiser Brenton Muller says ward closures could result from the industrial action, but says managers are to blame for failing to respond to staff concerns.

Mr Muller said they'd shown a lack of commitment to resolve the issues, and workers had no choice but to walk away.

"It's been going on since last year, and it's just been a talkfest with management, but obviously we are still hopeful we can sort something out," he said.

Workers are expected to return on Wednesday.
