A Southport man chose the worst possible servo to allegedly steal from - the Gold Coast store that had doubled as a police command post during the search for five-year-old Jocelyn Lewis.

Two police officers were still on the scene when it is alleged they were alerted to a disturbance in the store, where staff had recognised the man from previous matters.

The man's dramatic arrest was captured in the background of a live TV broadcast, as a reporter talked about the fact Jocelyn had been found safe and well.

The 20-year-old man was charged with several offences, including two counts of stealing.

A 19-year-old woman who was with the man was also arrested at the scene, charged with drug offences and possession of a knife.

They are due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on August 12.
