A man has been stabbed with garden secateurs after trying to stop a motorist leaving the scene of a road collision in Brisbane's north.

The 57-year-old Zillmere man was stabbed several times in his neck, hip and stomach after he approached the driver following the second of two crash incidents in Geebung.

Police say it occurred after two cars came into contact on Sunday night, causing an altercation, before they both drove away.

One vehicle then hit a light pole on Newman Rd and the 20-year-old driver started to walk away.

It's alleged a scuffle broke out after the 57-year-old approached the man and tried to stop him.

Police have charged a Clontarf man, 20, with unlawful wounding and he is due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on November 28.
