Police are hunting a man who fled from Rockhampton District Court moments after being convicted of sex offences.

The man, 33, forced his way out of the dock at 4.50pm on Thursday after being found guilty by a jury.

The building was placed into lockdown but the man managed to wedge himself through the automatic doors at the front of the building.

Rockhampton police saw the man driving through the Allenstown area of Rockhampton on Friday morning, but abandoned their pursuit after he increased speed and crossed onto the wrong side of the road.

Police say the man is about 188cm tall, with a heavy build and has short dark hair with facial stubble.

He was last seen wearing a dark blue t-shirt and dark jeans.

Police say the man isn't considered dangerous.
