The Queensland teenager accused of threatening to attack a Cairns primary school, sparking a lockdown will face court over the hoax.

The 17-year-old boy allegedly called police on Monday threatening violence towards the Balaclava State School.

Police have not detailed the nature of the threats, but The Cairns Post has reported he told police he had a knife and a handgun.

Police helped collect students, and following an extensive search of the grounds, the school was declared safe.

The teenager was taken into custody at around 7pm on Monday and has been charged with improper use of an emergency call service.

He will appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
