A north Queensland car dealership has shelled out for a new ambulance for Townsville's turtle hospital.

Over the past seven years, more than 200 marine turtles have been transported to the Reef HQ Great Barrier Reef Aquarium facility after getting into trouble between Cairns and Mackay.

While slow-moving, the reptiles can prove to be tricky patients, with some measuring up to two metres and weighing up to 150 kilograms.

The Carmichael Ford dealership has so far given three four-wheel drives to the hospital and will donate another on Thursday so it can upgrade its equipment.

The hospital opened in 2009 and helps rehabilitate sick or injured turtles that have been impacted by anything from fishing nets and boat strikes to plastic bags and other litter in the ocean.
