Reserve Bank governor Philip Lowe got a pay rise of almost a quarter of a million dollars when he was promoted to replace Glenn Stevens in September.

Dr Lowe's pay rose from $771,120 to $1.03 million when he moved from the role of deputy governor to governor, according to the central bank's annual report, released on Thursday.

Dr Lowe's remuneration is the same as that earned by Mr Stevens, and is dwarfed by the pay packets of the chief executives of the big four banks, which range from $5.5 million to more than $12 million.
