Real Madrid have beaten Sevilla 3-0 in their Copa del Rey last-16 first-leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.

It was their 38th straight game without defeat in all competitions and James Rodriguez took advantage of a rare start by scoring the first and the third goals.

The Colombian broke the deadlock on 10 minutes with a shot from outside the area.

Raphael Varane headed in the second on 29 minutes, before Rodriguez scored a penalty a minute before half time.

Sevilla had justifiable complaints about the spot-kick because Luka Modric appeared to go to ground after Rodriguez pushed defender Mariano into him.

But that aside they could have no complaints as Real Madrid marked the one-year anniversary of Zinedine Zidane taking the first team coach's job with an assured display.

Earlier Wednesday in the Copa del Rey Real Sociedad beat Villarreal 3-1 at Anoeta, and second division sides Alcorcon and Cordoba played out a goal-less draw.

Real Sociedad's win was marked by a comical second goal of the night from Carlos Vela after Villarreal defender Mario Gaspart and goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo left the ball to each other allowing it to rebound into Vela's path for a tap-in.

Barcelona travel to Athletic Bilbao on Thursday in the final last-16 first-leg games of the Copa del Rey.
