Rebel Wilson's comic skills are so pitch perfect it took her just one day to film her cameo role in the Absolutely Fabulous movie.

The Australian actress has a memorable scene playing an air steward on a budget airline in the film version of the popular TV show.

The film's writer and creator Jennifer Saunders seemed blown away by the Australian star's talents, and it seems the feeling was mutual.

Wilson actually reached out to Saunders through her flatmate, British comedian and Little Britain star Matt Lucas, before she hit the big time with her breakout role in hit film Bridesmaids.

"She was a fan of the show before she was famous and she was in LA looking for jobs and was about to do Bridesmaids I think," Saunders told AAP in Sydney.

"Matt Lucas said `Oh my flatmate's a really big fan of yours' and I said `oh how lovely, lovely' and he said if you're ever doing anything could you ... (include Wilson)' and I said `of course of course'.

"Then I saw Bridesmaids and I thought `Oh she's funny, she's very funny'," Saunders said.

Wilson's star went stratospheric and her talents became so in demand that Saunders was only able to lock her in for a day's worth of filming.

"Then of course she became the most famous person on the planet and the funniest. And we had her for a day," she said.

"It was the last day of shooting," Saunders' co-star, Joanna Lumley, said.

Wilson is not the only Australian to have a cameo in the comedy film.

Aussie comedian Barry Humphries has a memorable turn as wealthy playboy Charlie in the south of France where the film's stars end up on the run after Eddy (Saunders) is accused of killing supermodel Kate Moss.

Humphries also makes a brief appearance as his famous alter-ego, Dame Edna and Kylie Minogue features on the film's soundtrack singing the theme song, This Wheel's On Fire.

"There's an awful lot of Aussies in London, a lot of really talented clever ones," Saunders said.

"So they're a big part of the scene as it were."

* Absolutely Fabulous opens in Australian cinemas on August 4.
