A leading Queensland marine biologist who discovered new species of whale and dolphins has had a reef named in his honour.

Dr Peter Arnold's work led to the recognition of dwarf minke and snubfin dolphins in Australian waters.

The Peter Arnold Reef in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park has been named to commemorate the Townsville scientist, who died in 2006 at the age of 56.
