Former serviceman Alfred Leather died two months ago but authorities are yet to track down any of the Victorian man's relatives.

The 71-year-old died of natural causes in Melton South on September 18 and police are now calling for public assistance after an extensive search failed to find any family.

Investigators' knowledge of the man is scarce.

They've been told his daughter, Elizabeth, may live in South Australia and his son may be a pilot in London.

Police also know Mr Leather:

* changed his surname from Harm to Leather many years ago;

* was married twice - in South Australia and Darwin;

* spent some time in the defence force.

Anyone with information should call Melton Police on 03 9747 7999, Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
