Proposed changes to Tasmania's anti-discrimination laws make a specific exception for religious views.

The Liberal government on Thursday released details of changes to the act such as the addition of "religious purposes" to a list of exceptions which already include "academic", "artistic", "scientific" and "research purposes".

"The proposed changes seek to strike the right balance between providing protection from discrimination and unlawful conduct, while still allowing for genuine public debate and discussion on important issues," Attorney-General Vanessa Goodwin said, adding there is no provision for hate speech.

The government is calling for feedback on the changes and have indicated they hope to have them passed in parliament in time for debate ahead of the same-sex marriage plebiscite.
