Immigration Minister Peter Dutton says he's spoken to Colin Barnett about the West Australian premier's willingness to accept asylum seeker families from Nauru.

Mr Barnett has said his state is open to taking families, so long as they meet security and safety checks.

"I spoke to Premier Barnett yesterday in relation to this matter and I went through some of the detail about why it's difficult for people to come to Australia and that's the reason that regional processing centres were set up by Labor," Mr Dutton told reporters in Melbourne.
