Retail Food Group, the retail giant behind Gloria Jean's cafes, Brumby's bakeries and Pizza Capers, plans to expand its global franchise network to 3,500 outlets.

The owner of the cafe, pizza and bakery businesses has hit the 2,500-outlet milestone this year, with around 800 of those stores located in "high growth" overseas markets, including the USA, Asia and the Middle East.

"RFG has had a momentous year in 2016, and we think now is the perfect time to expand our family as we look towards our next major milestone - 3,500 outlets worldwide," RFG CEO Gary Alford said in a statement on Monday.

He said the group will offer up to $25,000 off up-front costs to encourage people to consider opening a franchised outlet to help boost the footprint.

"We've seen a lot of industries on a downward trend, particularly in mining and manufacturing, but retail remains steady and can provide great returns for a motivated and competent operator," Mr Alford said.
