Australia has opted against immediate returns for the bulk of their Rio Olympics gold medal-winning women's rugby sevens team.

Four Olympic champions will return to action for the Oceania Sevens Championship in Fiji - the first tournament since the Rio Games in August.

Gold medallists Shannon Parry, Sharni Williams, Emma Tonegato and Alicia Quirk will compete in the World Series warm-up event in Suva.

Recent World Rugby Award nominee Charlotte Caslick and fellow Rio stars Ellia Green and Chloe Dalton are among eight Olympians to sit out the November 11-12 tournament.

Australia's men's squad includes only two players older than 22 as the rebuild from their disappointing Rio campaign kicks off, with former captain and Olympian Ed Jenkins among the players to sit out.

John Porch, who has been given first shot at captaincy since Jenkins stood down from the role last month, is the only men's player to back up from the Olympics.

"We are in a unique period for the Australian men's sevens team having been through a changing of the guard after Rio," Australian coach Andy Friend said.

"It's an exciting period as we move to create the building blocks for a strong team for the future."

The World Series kicks off in Dubai on December 2.
